AMSTERDAM — Austrian Bundesliga runners-up Rapid Vienna have emerged as a loan option for Borussia Dortmund's reserve team goals machine Terrence Boyd.
The news was first broken by Austrian daily Heute and sources have since confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that the Green-Whites are in for the young forward, who has one year remaining on his reserve team contract with the reigning German champions. This option, suggested to Rapid by club hero and USMNT assistant coach Andreas Herzog, could hinge on whether Dortmund boss Jürgen Klopp wants to keep Boyd on the books.
Meanwhile, the 21-year-old is busy showing his wares at US national team camp this week in Orlando, Fla., leaving the transfer scenarios to his agent.
"[He] is doing work in Germany right now," Boyd told MLSsoccer.com at USMNT camp on Tuesday. "He's talking to some second league clubs in Germany and another first league club in Europe, then we'll see what’s going on."
In addition to Rapid Vienna and 2.Bundesliga outfit Braunschweig, at least one other German club is currently in the mix. Though he'd prefer to make his first team breakthrough in Dortmund, Boyd is eager to a jump into the top two divisions.
This past season, Boyd dressed once for the BvB first team, but did not appear. The Bremen-born forward led Borussia Dortmund II to the Regionalliga West championship and promotion by bagging 20 goals in 32 matches good for third on the league goal-scoring charts.
"I just want to play as high as possible," he said. "It's important to get a fair chance to play as a young guy."
