American Exports: English clubs after free agent Whitbread

Zak Whitbread celebrates a goal.

AMSTERDAM – The representative for free agent defender Zak Whitbread has confirmed receiving introductory calls from a number of clubs in England's top two fights.

On Friday, Norwich City announced they would not extend the oft-injured 28-year-old's contract in June. Sources have indicated to MLSsoccer.com that Championship winners Reading and Sunderland are flirting with signing Whitbread, while UK reports have also recently linked him with promoted Southampton and Wigan.

"There are a number of clubs with interest, both in the Premier League and the Championship," Whitbread's agent, Kevin Moran, told MLSsoccer.com.

The Houston native started 39 of his 44 league matches across three divisions for Norwich after arriving from Millwall in January of 2010. Having helped the Canaries to consecutive promotions, Whitbread worked 18 EPL contests for the 12th-place finishers this season.
