All-time text record secures GotW honor for Beckham

la galaxy midfielder david beckham celebrates freekick goal

The Impact’s defensive wall wasn’t the only thing David Beckham bent around this week.

The English legend unleashed his trademark free kick in front of more than 60,000 fans in Montreal – as well as edged out runner-up Lee Nguyen of New England on the final day of voting –en route to winning the AT&T Goal of the Week for Week 10.

Nguyen – who had already taken home Player of the Week and Team of the Week honors – settled a throw-in from the left side of the pitch and belted a wicked half-volley that dipped its way into the far corner. The 25-year-old actually topped Beckham in the online poll, but a late surge in text voting – an all-time record – helped push Beckham ahead of Nguyen for best strike.

The award is already Beckham’s second Goal of the Week honor through just 10 weeks of the 2012 campaign. He got the nod back in Week 6 when his wonder strike helped the Galaxy secure a 3-1 win on the road in Portland.
