American Exports: Onyewu watches Sporting CP fall

Oguchi Onyewu scored twice for Sporting vs. Beira Mar

AMSTERDAM — A pair of Americans saw cup dreams die overseas on Thursday, with Sporting CP defender Oguchi Onyewu watching from the bench as the visitors fell out of the Europa League semifinals with a 3-1 loss at Atheltic Bilbao.

The Lions led the tie at the start of the night and again after Ricky van Wolfswinkel leveled the game near halftime. However, the Basques quickly equalized both the match and the semifinal seconds later, and star man Fernando Llorente nodded home in the 88th minute to send them on to the Bucharest final on a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Meanwhile, in Denmark, Brad Rusin and HB Køge fell just shy of the Ekstra Bladet Cup final after a 1-0 defeat at semifinal second leg hosts AC Horsens.

The American, who saw yellow near the hour, narrowly missed breaking the ice with a header in the 80th minute. Already leading the tie on away goals from the 2-2 opening leg, Horsens put it away through Jeppe Mehl four minutes from time.
