Player of the Matchday

NY's Thierry Henry makes history with PotW three-peat

Thierry Henry - April 7, 2012

Who do you think should have been named MLS Player of the Week for Matchday 5?

Thierry Henry is re-writing the history books in 2012.

No player had ever won the MLS Player of the Week award for three weeks running. Until now.

The New York Red Bulls forward, who leads the scoring charts with seven goals after five matches, was voted the weekend's best performer by the North American Soccer Reporters after registering another two goals and an assist in a 4-1 road win over the Columbus Crew.

The Frenchman lofted a pass which strikemate Kenny Cooper converted into a goal after three minutes and he also contributed with two finishes of his own in the 13th and 90th minutes, finding himself unmarked on both occasions.

The performance earned him nine of 19 first-place votes among the media members submitting ballots (see how the media voted here). Chivas USA's Ryan Smith (4), Cooper (3), San Jose's Chris Wondolowski (2) and Sporting Kansas City's Kei Kamara (1) claimed the other votes.
