FC Dallas midfielder David Ferreira will undergo surgery to repair a small fracture in his right foot on Tuesday, and is expected to miss six to eight weeks following the procedure, the club announced on Tuesday.
"David injured his right foot during a training match in Florida,” FC Dallas team doctor James C. Walter II said in a statement. “This is an unfortunate, un-related injury to the one he suffered last season. This fracture is in a bone in the back of the foot that is prone to injury in soccer players and dancers. It causes pain with both running and kicking.
"While the pain usually resolves with rest and rehab, David has failed to progress satisfactorily with conservative, non-surgical treatment. He and the team have elected to proceed with surgical excision of the problematic bone."
Dr. Eugene Curry, who repaired Ferreira’s ankle last season, will perform the surgery on Tuesday. The original ankle injury has completely healed.
“David’s injury hasn’t responded to treatment the way we expected,” FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said in a statement. “He went back to the doctor for additional tests and got second and third opinions to be sure he chose the best path to recovery for him. We feel confident this is the best way to get David 100 percent back to the field.”
The team and league MVP in 2010, Ferreira recorded eight goals and 13 assists in leading FC Dallas to their first MLS Cup appearance and a Western Conference Championship. In 2011, Ferreira started six FC Dallas games and led the team with three goals and one assist before a broken right ankle sidelined him at the end of April.
