US Under-23 national team head coach Caleb Porter isn't going anywhere for now.
For fans wondering what the future holds for Porter after the US U-23s' ouster in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying on Monday, the US Soccer Federation has confirmed that Porter's contract is set to run through April 30. That date was stipulated in his contract in the case of elimination during CONCACAF qualifying.
But Porter's time with the US national team program may not necessarily come to an end on April 30.
A US Soccer spokesman confirmed that Porter, who is also the head coach at NCAA Division-I University of Akron, will participate in a standard post-tournament review process and whether or not he returns, potentially in another role or with another US team (he was formerly a US U-18 coach), will be a topic of discussion.
US men's national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann reserved praise for the style of play Porter implemented with the junior side.
"[I liked] what you saw in terms of style, pace of the game, technical elements in the game," Klinsmann said in the wake of Monday night's 3-3 tie against El Salvador in Nashville, Tenn. "You saw that tonight, against Cuba, against Mexico. That is very important for us to see that we are on the right path here in terms of style of play."
It's worth noting that the US Under-23 program is usually on hiatus outside the eight-month window leading up to the summer Olympics which take place every four years. Porter was appointed to the U-23 post on October 20, 2011.
After defeating Mexico 2-0 on February 29, the US went 1-1-1 in the group stages of Olympic qualifying with a semifinal ticket slipping from their grasp against El Salvador following an equalizer scored by the Central Americans on the last play of the game.
