American Exports: Johnson, Williams can't help H'heim

Hoffenheim's Fabian Johnson

AMSTERDAM — The Hoffenheim duo of Fabian Johnson and Daniel Williams ran at all temperatures during full shifts on Friday, as the home side dropped a 2-1 decision to southern rivals Stuttgart.

Johnson (above) was both a blessing and a curse in his return to left back, with an active role in each of the goals scored on the night, while Williams worked solidly from defensive midfield.

Former Hoffenheim ace Vedad Ibisevic bagged a first-half brace for the victorious guests, with Johnson allowing Stuttgart opposite Khalid Boulahrouz far too much time and space to cross on both goal plays.

The US wide man would later get a mesaure of redemption when fouled in the area by Mexico defender Maza Rodríguez to set up a Sejad Salihovic spot kick with 16 minutes to play. As the Bundesliga counts earned penalties as assists, Johnson moved up to fourth in the league with eight on the season.

The comeback stalled there, however, leaving 12th-place Hoffenheim winless in their last eight home matches.
