Fire sign German defender Friedrich to help backline

Former German international defender Arne Friedrich

The Chicago Fire announced on Wednesday that they have signed German defender Arne Friedrich, who will be added to the roster pending the receipt of his P1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Arne is a talented defender that brings strength, experience and depth to our backline,” Chicago Fire head coach Frank Klopas said in a statement. “His international credentials and track record in the German Bundesliga give our young players another great professional example to learn from.”

The 32-year-old Friedrich joins the Men in Red from German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg, for whom he’s played 15 games since 2010. Prior to his stint with Die Wölfe, the 6-foot-1 defender played eight seasons with Hertha Berlin, captaining the club from 2004 onwards.

Friedrich has earned 82 caps for the German national team since his debut in 2002, making 13 World Cup appearances in Die Mannschaft’s 2006 and 2010 campaigns.
