Gringo Report: Cunningham's night sweet and sour

Jeff Cunningham celebrates a goal for Comunicaciones

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Jeff Cunningham had a mixed night Wednesday, scoring his second goal for Comunicaciones in the Guatemalan league and receiving his first red card.

Los Cremas faced a disciplined opponent in Peñarol La Mesilla, but it was ex-MLS players that handed Comunicaciones the victory.

Former Chivas USA defender Michael Umaña put Comunicaciones up in the 32nd minute, heading in a corner.

In the 56th minute, Cunningham, the all-time MLS leading goalscorer, sealed the victory by putting the ball in the back of the net in typical poachers fashion after a series of rebounds in the penalty area.

Things then turned sour for 35-year-old, who was given a controversial second yellow in the 78th for simulation. He'll miss his team's trip to Malacateco on Sunday.

The victory puts Comunicaciones in second position in the Guatemalan league, three points behind leaders Marquense.

In the Copa Libertadores, former University of Virginia goalkeeper Diego Restrepo was not called up for Deportico Táchira's 1-1 tie against Brazilian giants Corinthians.
