American Exports: Friedel blanks Whitbread, Norwich City

AMSTERDAM — A trio of Americans sported the club badge in Europe on Tuesday, with Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel needing just two saves to post a 2-0 victory over Zak Whitbread and Norwich City.

The home defender picked up a yellow card during his solid full shift, and Friedel notched his fourth clean sheet in six games to ensure a second-half brace from Gareth Bale stood up for all three points. Third-place Spurs trimmed their deficit behind first-place Manchester City to seven points with a game in hand, while Norwich remain 11th in the table.

Turning focus to Belgium's Jupiler League lead, Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht had a bit of an off night in a 1-1 draw at Mons. The home side equalized five minutes from time, forcing the Mauves to be satisfied with a one-point edge at the top at the winter pause.
