In professional sports, cheering for a rival is almost unheard of. But in April, Real Salt Lake carried the flag for all American soccer in the CONCACAF Champions League Finals against Mexican powerhouse Monterrey.
An American team has never won a tournament of this stature that featured a game on foreign soil, and despite Real Salt Lake’s eventual loss at home on aggregate, #MLS4RSL demonstrated the passion and fervor of the growing American soccer fan base.
The #MLS4RSL movement was highlighted by considerable coverage in the blogosphere, a video in which MLS executives, coaches and players expressed their support for a Real Salt Lake (below), and a Twibbon campaign featuring the unique #MLS4RSL logo.
