Whitecaps deal Nolly, re-sign Cannon and Thorrington

Jay Nolly of the Vancouver Whitecaps

The Vancouver Whitecaps announced on Monday that they have traded goalkeeper Jay Nolly from the Vancouver Whitecaps to the Chicago Fire in exchange for for a first-round selection in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft.

Nolly arrives in Chicago after an up-and-down season with the Whitecaps. The 6-foot-3 'keeper started 11 of Vancouver's first 12 MLS matches, but his 16 goals allowed and 1-4-6 record led interim head coach Tom Soehn to bench him in favor of Joe Cannon following the departure of Teitur Thordarson.

Nolly played three seasons with the second-division Whitecaps prior to their move to MLS, making 83 appearances and leading the team to the 2008 USL First Division Championship. Nolly won USSF Division 2 Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2010.

Vancouver also announced on Monday that they had re-signed Cannon, as well as midfielder John Thorrington. As a result, neither player will be eligible for selection in the Re-Entry Draft process.

Per league and team policy, the terms of the deals were not disclosed.
