GUADALAJARA, Mexico – For the Americans playing down in Mexico, this weekend’s schedule of fixtures could provide some sorely needed minutes while a host of regulars are away with their national teams.
Edgar Castillo (above) has not played under new Club América boss Alfredo Tena, but could get his chance in Estadio Azteca against Morelia on Sunday (5 pm ET, Univisión). Forward Isaac Acuña also has yet to set foot onto the field under the new Águilas boss.
Jonathan Bornstein is in the same boat, on the fringes of the Tigres UANL squad. When they take on leaders Pumas UNAM on Saturday in the game of the weekend in Mexico, the ex-Chivas USA man has his best chance of playing in some time (8 pm ET, Telemundo).
Meanwhile, Joe Corona and his struggling Club Tijuana face a massive relegation game against Atlas on Saturday (9:45 pm ET, Galavisión). Xolos are currently at the bottom of the relegation table in Mexico’s first division with Atlas just above.
Herculez Gomez and Estudiantes Tecos will be hoping to take advantage of the fact that Monterrey have a number of players out when the teams meet on Friday night (9 pm ET, Galavisión).
Atlante’s Sonny Guadarrama could see some minutes when the team takes on San Luis on Saturday (10 pm, TeleFutura).
In the Mexican Liga de Ascenso, Marco Vidal’s Club León play los Tiburones Rojos of Veracruz on Saturday (9 pm ET).
While the rest of the Colombian league has a weekend off, Diego Restrepo’s América de Cali face Quindío in a catch-up game from a previous round of matches (Saturday 7:20 pm ET).
