GUADALAJARA, Mexico — A trio of Americans will get their first taste of their new coaches South of the Border this weekend, as Club América’s Edgar Castillo and Isaac Acuña face Joe Corona’s Club Tijuana on Sunday (5 pm ET, Univisión) at Estadio Azteca.
Both las Águilas and Xolos will have new gaffers on the bench after both clubs fired their previous coaches last weekend. New América coach Alfredo Tena will be able to count on defender Castillo (above), who should be fit after recovering from a thigh strain, according to Mexican press reports.
Meanwhile, Pachuca will be without 23-year-old José Francisco Torres as he recovers from surgery on his fractured left foot. Los Tuzos – who have the best home record in the Mexican first division this season – face Michael Orozco Fiscal’s San Luis at Estadio Hidalgo on Saturday (8 pm ET, TeleFutura).
In Guadalajara, Herculez Gomez and Estudiantes Tecos face defending champions Pumas UNAM at the 3 de Marzo on Saturday (8 pm ET, Galavisión), with the former MLS striker looking for his first start since August 13.
Miguel Ángel Ponce’s Chivas de Guadalajara travel to Cruz Azul in a top-of-the table clash on Saturday (6 pm ET, ESPN Deportes), while DaMarcus Beasley and Puebla face Santos at home on Sunday (1 pm ET, Fox Deportes, Azteca America) as they seek to build on last week’s fine 4-1 victory against Chivas.
Tigres UANL’s Jonathan Bornstein and Jaguares’ Adrian Ruelas will both be hoping for first-team minutes when their teams meet on Saturday (8 pm ET, Telemundo). Sonny Guadarrama’s Atlante play Atlas on Saturday evening (9:45 pm ET, TeleFutura).
In the Liga de Ascenso, Texan Marco Vidal’s Club León – fifth in the league – host fourth-placed Irapuato (Saturday, 9 pm ET).
Diego Chávarri is back in light training after injury but is not likely to be involved for Sporting Cristal in Peru this weekend.
In Colombia, América de Cali play Junior at (6:30 pm ET, Sunday), with Diego Restrepo looking to regain his position in the starting lineup.
