American Exports: Bradley off to flying start in Serie A

AMSTERDAM — Several American Exports punched the time clock in Europe on Wednesday, with Chievo midfielder Michael Bradley enjoying a 1-0 win over visiting Napoli in his first Serie A start.


The US midfielder worked a competent shift at right defensive midfield as the Flying Donkeys soared up to 10th place on an opportunistic strike by Davide Moscardelli 18 minutes from time.


Over in Scottish Communities League Cup play, Alejandro Bedoya got his first Rangers start in a losing cause as the holders went down 3-2 in extra time at Falkirk. Bedoya put in a decent 59 minutes on his return from a calf knock, while club and country teammate Carlos Bocanegra went the distance in the away defense.


Down south in England's Carling Cup, Jonathan Spector pitched in a respectable 90 minutes at right back as holders Birmingham City saw their defense halted by a 2-0 third-round defeat at Manchester City. The American handyman nearly made a game of it when his 30-yard knuckleball narrowly missed the frame close to halftime.


Elsewhere, Tim Howard got a prime dugout seat to watch Everton see off West Bromwich Albion with an 89th-minute equalizer and extra time 2-1 winner.


In Denmark, Michael Parkhurst and two-time defending Ekstra Bladet Cup champs won out for the 14th consecutive tourney round with a 2-0 victory at Hjørring.


SønderjyskE attacker Conor O'Brien hopped off the bench to hit the late winner for a 1-0 decision at mites Svebølle.


Clarence Goodson and Brøndby made it a 100 percent night for Americans in Denmark, sailing into the round of 16 thanks to a 4-0 breeze at third flight Elite 3000.


Sweden's Allsvenskan was in midweek session, with Ryan Miller back in the Halmstads BK lineup at right back for a 5-1 home humbling by defending champs Malmö FF.


Russian Cup action saw Eugene Starikov work a strong second half as Tom Tomsk were ousted by a 3-1 loss to round-of-16 hosts FC Rostov. The American's 47th-minute header off the bar was deposited for his side's lone goal and he was also robbed by the home goalkeeper in the 64th minute.


Heading to the Czech Republic Football Cup, Stefan Jerome came on for the final 12 minutes to help Sigma Olomouc close out a place in the quarterfinals with a 4-1 away raid on Sezimovo Ústí.


Finally, in Belgium's Confidis Cup, Sacha Kljestan got a bench breather as Anderlecht advanced  with a 4-0 cruise at mites Lommel. The Mauves will now host third-division side Rupel Boom in the round of 16 on Oct. 26.
