#4. Steve Zakuani
Pos: M | Seattle Sounders | Age: 23
It was shaping up to be a special season for Steve Zakuani. He came out of the gates with purpose in 2011, mature and determined to be a difference maker and leader for his team in every match. But his strong start came to a screeching halt after breaking his leg on the infamous tackle by Colorado’s Brian Mullan, which still endures as one of the most impactful moments of the current campaign. Despite his track record and No. 4 ranking, he’ll have to prove himself all over again that he can come back to be the same player he was at the start of this year.
What the TDs and coaches say: "Very, very good player. He’s great to watch … Good wide player who can take guys on going to the right or the left with pace … Dangerous in the open field … When you have a team talk, he’s one of those guys that you definitely try and plan for. He has the qualities fans enjoy and the things opposing coaches hate … We all know he’s a wonderful talent and we all hope he comes back the way he was … Mentally, he’ll be a little worried about getting tackled. He’ll be weary of it but once he’s gone through a few games he’ll be fine."
