#6. Freddy Adu
Pos: M/F | Philadelphia Union | Age: 22
Freddy Adu is held to a different standard as far as 22-year-olds are concerned. Fans want immediate results. And those expectations are partially fair given the fact that Adu signed for D.C. United at age 14 and he’s received high level experiences with overseas clubs and with the US national team. A more mature and seasoned Adu feels he is ready and eager to capitalize on this second chance in MLS with Philadelphia and fulfill on the promise of the early days. No one questions his talent. Success will be measured by whether that talent can consistently generate results. When your name is Freddy Adu, the bar is set higher. No matter the age.
What the TDs and coaches say: "Lots of talent and can change the game on his own ability … Technically he’s good and clean on his technique … He’s explosive and quick and very good on the one-v-one penetration … What he’s got now is the international experience … A young guy that I’m sure will be counted on by the national team … He’s got to be a little more of a two-way player and defend with the same enthusiasm that he attacks. Even if he knows it, it’s something that’s got to get done … It’s very important now that he finds a home and he plays consistently and at the level where people expect him to be … He’s still young, but he’s got to start producing and being consistent."
