American Exports: Lichaj, Guzan lead Villa to triumph

Eric Lichaj is hoping to land his first USMNT cap in the coming days.

AMSTERDAM — Eric Lichaj bagged the late winner and Brad Guzan posted a shutout in goal as the Carling Cup second-round hosts Aston Villa saw off League Two battlers Hereford on Tuesday night by a 2-0 count.

The US netminder made three saves on the evening, but still needed for Lichaj to bundle home a corner kick pinball with 10 minutes remaining in order to record his first Villa win in 11 months.

Elsewhere, Robbie Findley fired his second goal in as many Carling Cup outings as Nottingham Forest eased past League Two home side Wycombe Wanderers 4-1.

With the Reds already up two in the 62nd minute, the former Real Salt Lake ace separated from a defender to place his shot far-side from just inside the area.

The night went quite a bit rougher for Zak Whitbread and Norwich City, with the Premier League outfit bounced from the tourney by a 4-0 home loss to third-flight MK Dons.

The center back worked 71 minutes in his return from a minor knee injury suffered in the Canaries' league opener last weekend.
