Reports: Freddy Adu to sign with Philadelphia Union

US national team midfielder Freddy Adu is set to sign with the Philadelphia Union, according to multiple media reports published on Thursday.

CSNPhilly.com and FOX Sports claim that the 22-year-old has agreed to terms with the Union, and though the MLS club declined comment on the reports, it said it will formally introduce a new player on Friday at noon ET.

Adu began his professional career as a 14-year-old in 2004, when he became the youngest-ever player to sign a contract with MLS. He made his debut with D.C. United under then-coach Peter Nowak, who is currently the head coach at the Philadelphia Union. He scored 11 goals in 87 appearances for the Black-and-Red.

Following a stint at RSL, the two-time MLS All-Star left the league in 2007 to pursue a career with Portuguese club Benfica. He then spent loan time with Belenenses, Aris and Çaykur Rizespor, though he only saw a handful of games. However, he enjoyed a career resurgence after former US coach Bob Bradley called him for this past summer's Gold Cup.
