World Football Challenge: Juventus, Sporting Clube de Portugal in Toronto

NEW YORK — Storied Italian club Juventus FC and legendary Portuguese side Sporting Clube de Portugal will square off as part of this summer’s Herbalife World Football Challenge at BMO Field in Toronto.

The match — which is the 13th announced so far in the WFC — will take place on July 23 (7 pm ET).

Juventus are also slated to face Mexican favorite Club América on July 26 at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., while the match in Toronto will be Sporting’s only match of the tournament.

Juventus boast 27 Serie A league championships all-time and two European Champions’ Cup/UEFA Champions League crowns. The current roster includes a wealth of talent that helped Italy win the 2006 World Cup, including goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, striker Luca Toni and fellow forward and team captain Alessandro Del Piero, who boasts 490 appearances with the club since 1993.

Sporting Clube de Portugal, meanwhile, have won 18 national championship titles and 15 national cups, while also appearing in UEFA Champions League matches 17 times, and in eight UEFA Cup Winners' Cup matches. 

They’re led by forward Hélder Postiga, who has 40 caps with the Portuguese national team, and central defender and captain Daniel Carriço.
