Goal of the Matchday

Beckham's free kick wins AT&T Goal of the Week

David Beckham in LA Galaxy's draw with New York Red Bulls.

David Beckham’s first goal of the season was certainly a memorable one, and good enough to crush the rest of the field in the voting for the AT&T Goal of the Week.

The Galaxy star took the top honor for Week 9 by earning 77 percent of the total of mobile and online voting, easily outpacing a solid field of goals by stars like Chicago’s Marco Pappa and San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski.

Beckham tallied his first goal in quintessential Beckham fashion, curving a right-footed free kick into the back of the Sporting Kansas City net from a tight angle at the top right corner of the penalty box. He beat Sporting goalkeeper Eric Kronberg to the near post on the 87th-minute goal, which capped LA’s 4-1 win at the Home Depot Center.

Final results via online and text voting

  1. David Beckham, LA 77%
  2. Khari Stephenson, San Jose 9%
  3. Marco Pappa, Chicago 8%
  4. Justin Braun, Chivas USA 4%
  5. Chris Wondolowski, San Jose 2%
