Union, Real Madrid to meet in World Football Challenge

After a two-game stint in California, Real Madrid’s summer tour is now set to roll east.

On Thursday, Major League Soccer and CAA announced that the Spanish powerhouse will take on the Philadelphia Union as part of the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge.

The match is scheduled for July 23 at Lincoln Financial Field. Kick off is at 9 pm ET.

Real Madrid will arrive in Philly after taking on the LA Galaxy at the LA Memorial Coliseum on July 16 and Chivas de Guadalajara on July 20 at Qualcomm Park in San Diego.

This friendly with Madrid marks the second straight year the Union have enjoyed a high-profile international match following their inception in 2010. Philadelphia took on Manchester United last July, losing 1-0.

“We are delighted to play another world-class international team at Lincoln Financial Field this summer,” Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz said in a statement released by the club. “This will be another chance for us to showcase that the Union can stand toe-to-toe with the elite teams of the world.”

Philadelphia’s MLS match away to the Seattle Sounders, originally scheduled for July 23, has been moved to October 8.
