American Exports: Gasecki signs with Borussia Dortmund

Chicago native Oskar Gosecki has signed with Borussia Dortmund.

AMSTERDAM — Western Illinois University wingback Oskar Gasecki has signed a three-year deal to join Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

Though expected to train part-time with the first squad, the former Chicago area youth standout will begin his pro career with Borussia Dortmund II, who play in the fourth-flight Regionalliga West. The 20-year-old, who impressed during a trial over spring break, will fly over this weekend to prepare for next season.

"I couldn't be happier," Gasecki told MLSsoccer.com by phone. "It's a dream come true."

The natural left back is a two-footed player that can slide up to midfield or hop over to the right side of defense. He has yet to have specific expectations placed on him by the Dortmund coaching staff, but has a clear idea of the game he'd like to take to the Bundesliga.

"I'm an aggressive player," offered Gasecki. "I love to go forward in attack, so hopefully I can bring an attacking attitude."

Fully aware of the physical nature of German play, the youngster has already started preparing physically and expects to need some time to adapt. Gasecki has been alternating running and weight work during mornings, with afternoons reserved for ball training.

"I'm getting fit, getting ready," he stated. "I need to make my legs a lot stronger. I have to get a certain amount of games and work to get my spot. I have a lot of work ahead of me."

In addition, Gasecki says he has taken the initiative to start learning German, even though the club will place him in lessons once he arrives.

"I have Rosetta Stone," he laughed. "So I'm slowly learning the language."

A Polish citizen born in South Africa, Gasecki is on the verge of taking his American citizenship exam. Furthermore, MLSsoccer.com has learned that US Soccer has been monitoring his situation and plan to track his progress in Dortmund.

With two games remaining in the current Regionalliga West season, Borussia Dortmund II stand sixth on a five-game win streak. The new campaign will begin in early August.
