NEW YORK – The 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge is only getting bigger.
On Thursday it was announced that the LA Galaxy will play a second match in this summer’s international soccer showcase, hosting English FA Cup finalists Manchester City at the Home Depot Center on Sunday, July 24 (4 pm ET).
The match comes only eight days after the Galaxy host Real Madrid at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Saturday, July 16.
It will also mark the second match of the competition for Manchester City, who this week qualified for the UEFA Champions League by virtue of locking up a top-four finish in the English Premier League. The Citizens, as they are nicknamed, also face the Vancouver Whitecaps at Empire Field on July 18.
The Galaxy’s first WFC opponent, Real Madrid, are the reigning Spanish Copa del Rey champs and Manchester City can claim their own English domestic cup competition with a win over Stoke City in the FA Cup final at the new Wembley Stadium this weekend.
“It was very important to our club to host an international friendly here at The Home Depot Center for our fans, especially those who come to this stadium week in and week out to support the Galaxy,” LA president Tom Payne said in a club statement.
The 2011 World Football Challenge now features a total of eight matches, including two matches for MLS clubs against English champions and UEFA Champions League finalists Manchester United.
