Dempsey pulling for FC Dallas at MLS Cup

Clint Dempsey

AMSTERDAM — Sunday's MLS Cup (8:30 pm ET, ESPN, Galavisión) pits FC Dallas against the Colorado Rapids. Both teams are gunning for a club-first MLS title, but Fulham ace and Nacogdoches, Texas, native Clint Dempsey is hoping for some home cookin' at BMO Field.

"I'd have to go for Dallas," Dempsey told MLSsoccer.com over the phone. "I'm from Texas and you always want to see a team from your state do well."

Unfortunately, the US attacker is a busy man in West London these days, and fresh from helping Fulham host Manchester City on Sunday, it seems likely he won't be able to watch the game live.

"I really don't get a chance to follow the league that much," Dempsey admitted. "I've got so much going on over here, but my heart is still with the New England Revolution. I always want them to do well. I'm grateful for the opportunity I got to play that under Steve Nicol and Paul Mariner, and the players that I got to play with. I had three great years there."

As for the possibility of one day returning to the old Revs stomping ground, Dempsey intimates that his path will wend a different way.

"I don't think so," he says of coming back to MLS later. "I think I'll end my career in Europe. That's kinda what I've always said. Nothing bad against MLS. I had a great time there, and without them, I would have not been able to make the jump over here. I appreciate them for that, but I want to finish my career in Europe."
