The No. 6 Maryland Terrapins were at it again Tuesday night. Just a few days after topping the No. 19 Duke Blue Devils, the Terps (6-2-1) posted a 1-0 shutout over the No. 2 Connecticut Huskies (7-1-2) in College Park, Md.
Freshman midfielder Patrick Mullins came off the bench to tally the game’s lone goal in the first half, and defender Ethan White and goalie Zac MacMath teamed up to shutdown the vaunted Husky attack.
The loss was Connecticut’s first of the season and the first time they failed to score this year.
It was a good night all around for the ACC on Tuesday. As a whole, the conference posted a 7-1 mark against non-conference opposition.
That included a pair of routs as Duke (4-2-3) defeated Davidson, 4-1, behind two Ryan Finley goals, and No. 4 North Carolina (6-2-0) handed Radford a 5-1 drubbing in Chapel Hill, N.C.
No. 7 Virginia (7-2-1) went up on in-state rival Liberty within the first five minutes on a Brian Ownby tally, but the Flames countered with a second half strike to level the score. The Cavaliers would need an 81st penalty to finally pull ahead, and the game finished 2-1 to Wa-hoo-wa.
While the power conference in men’s soccer soared Tuesday evening, it was the Midwest with the statement game of the evening, when the No. 11 Creighton Bluejays took a 3-1 victory over the No. 5 Tulsa Golden Hurricane (7-2-0).
Ethan Finlay’s first half performance proved to be the difference, as his brace helped the Bluejays (8-1-0) jump out to a 3-0 lead in the opening stanza. Finlay tallied his first goal in just under a minute and Creighton never looked back from there.
Elsewhere, No. 13 Brown continued their strong start to the season, squeaking by No. 22 St. John’s (6-4-0) by a 1-0 margin. It was the Bears’ (7-0-2) fourth straight shutout of the season, a good sign with a matchup against Ivy League rival Harvard looming. Junior midfielder Evan Coleman scored the game winner in the third minute.
