Chicago's Segares fined, suspended 2 games

Gonzalo Segares returns to the Fire after a stint in Cyprus.

Chicago Fire left back Gonzalo Segares has been issued a two-game suspension and a $500 fine for his actions in last weekend's game against the LA Galaxy, MLS announced on Tuesday.

Segares was issued a straight red card in the 21st minute of the Fireā€™s 1-1 draw against the Galaxy last Saturday for striking LA defender Leonardo in the back of the head as the Brazilian looked to head a free kick towards goal.

For his actions, Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee suspended Segares for one game and fined him $250. However, the incident was deemed dangerous for the safety of Leonardo, so an additional one-game suspension and $250 were tacked on.

Segares, who rejoined Chicago in August after a short stint with Cypriot club Apollon Limassol, will miss two critical games ā€“ Wednesday against Toronto and Saturday against Philadelphia ā€“ of the Fire's remaining eight as the club attempts to secure a postseason spot.
