Longtime D.C. United defender Bryan Namoff has called it quits – at least for now – after a 10-year MLS career, the club announced on Thursday.
Namoff has struggled to recover from a concussion he suffered last September and will join the club's technical staff in a new role in which he will assist GM Dave Kasper with scouting and youth development, among other duties.
The Rockville, Ill., native sustained a concussion during a match against Seattle last September and complained in the months that followed of headaches, soreness and blurred vision. He participated in limited training with the team but had not played a match this season. DC coach Curt Onalfo said in May he was doubtful Namoff would return in 2010.
The 31-year-old Namoff has been a key member of DC's defense since his rookie season in 2001 and ranks third on the club's all-time appearance list with 195 games played. He helped United to the MLS Cup in 2004, back-to-back Supporters' Shield in 2006 and '07, and the US Open Cup in '08.
