Gonzalez wonder strike earns AT&T GOTW award

The Costa Rican's wonder strike in the fifth minute of Saturday's home match against the New England Revolution at Qwest Field opened the flood gates for a resounding 3-0 Sounders victory. It also interrupted Seattle's 270-minute home scoreless streak.

An overlapping run by González put him in position to lash a first time shot from the left corner of the box which swerved past Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

It was the first career goal for González and it handily beat out his nearest competitors for the honor: NYRB forward Juan Pablo Angel (24 percent) and Sounders teammate Steve Zakuani (15 percent). Red Bulls midfielder Seth Stammler, who had a thunderous strike of his own against Chivas USA, finished dead last among the five candidates with only four percent of the vote.
