Wizards set for 2007 SuperDraft

Dave van den Bergh

Van den Bergh traded for draft pick

The Kansas City Wizards announced that forward/midfielder Dave van den Bergh was traded to Red Bull New York for a third round supplemental draft pick. Van den Bergh played in 13 games for Kansas City this year after being acquired during the summer transfer window.

"We would like to thank Dave for his service to the Kansas City Wizards," Technical Director Peter Vermes said. "We appreciate the effort he put in during his time in Kansas City and wish him the best of luck with New York."

During his one season with the Wizards, van den Bergh played in 13 games, scoring three goals and tallying two assists.

The supplemental draft will be held January 18.

SuperDraft Friday, Supplemental Draft next Thursday

In a world where professional sports draft are televised, analyzed and scrutinized tremendously, MLS has a system quite different than the NFL, NBA or MLB draft. The MLS SuperDraft (Tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT, televised on ESPN 2) lasts four rounds and includes a field of graduated college players and select members of Generation adidas.

The Supplemental Draft, scheduled for next Thursday, includes any players not drafted in the SuperDraft and players who have been cut or waived by MLS clubs since the end of the 2006 season. From 1996-1999, the Supplemental Draft allowed teams to draft players currently playing professionally in American leagues other than MLS. Since the creation of the Reserve Division two years ago and contractual limits of the SuperDraft, a need for more players brought about the Supplemental Draft's reinstatement. Former Wizards supplemental draft pick Brandon Prideaux became a starter on the 2000 MLS Cup Championship team and still plays in MLS.

Generation adidas, a program designed by MLS to ensure underclassmen that wish to enter the draft get their degree, has seen unprecedented success. Players included in the program become eligible for the draft and receive educational grants to finish college while playing professionally. Current Wizards Ryan Pore and Will John are program participants. Major League Soccer's rookie of the year has been a member of the Generation adidas program in each of the last three years.

This year's Generation adidas class includes:

GK - Chris Seitz of the University of Maryland
M - Maurice Edu of the University of Maryland
M/F - Nico Colacula of the University of Virginia
D - Bakary Soumare of the University of Virginia
M/F - Abdus Ibrahim of United State's U-17
