Wizards face Carolina RailHawks in Open Cup

The Kansas City Wizards will face the Carolina RailHawks Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. CT in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup round of 16 match at WakeMed Park in Cary, NC. Video from the game will be available live via www.kcwizards.com.

The Wizards defeated the Colorado Rapids June 4 in penalty kicks to become one of eight MLS teams that qualify for the Open Cup. Kansas City has not appeared in the Open Cup proper since 2006, after losing in a 2007 play-in game. Kansas City is 9-9 all-time in Open Cup play, including a 3-6 road record. The Wizards won the event in 2004. Kansas City and Carolina have never met in any competition.

If Kansas City wins Tuesday, they will play the winner of Chivas USA's (MLS) match against the Seattle Sounders (USL-1). If Chivas USA wins, the Wizards will travel to Los Angeles for a Monday game, time TBA. If Seattle wins, the Wizards will travel to Seattle for a Tuesday match, time TBA.

The U.S. Open Cup has existed for more than 90 years and incorporates American soccer clubs of every level - ranging from Major League Soccer teams to the amateur leagues. The annual event, which began in 1914, also ranks among the oldest cup competitions in the world. The single-elimination tournament was born as the National Challenge Cup, and was modeled after England's Football Association Cup.
