Seattle win 6-5 in penalty kicks

The Kansas City Wizards were eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night in penalty kicks 6-5 after playing to a 0-0 draw with the Seattle Sounders (USL-1) through 120 minutes. Kansas City fielded a lineup that included zero starters from the last MLS match during the first half. Kansas City's last four matches in Open Cup play have gone to extra time, and two have gone to penalties.

Kansas City and Seattle played an up-and-down first half, with each team generating seven shots. The Wizards held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Wizards best scoring opportunity of the first half came in 18th minute and started through midfielder Roger Espinoza at the center of the park. Espinoza lofted a ball up the right flank to forward Ryan Pore running at the Sounders goal. Pore cut inside a defender and slipped the ball through to strike partner Michael Kraus. Kraus slid to put a shot on goal, but goalkeeper Chris Eylander was there to smother the opportunity.

In the second half, defender Tyson Wahl made a great hustle play to keep Seattle off the score sheet. In the 78th minute, the Sounders took a quick restart in midfield and the ball ended up behind the Wizards defense to forward Sebastian LeToux. Le Toux lofted the ball up and over goalkeeper Eric Kronberg, who had come quickly off his goal line, but Wahl was there to clear the ball away and out of danger.

Substitute midfielder Michael Harrington caused trouble for the Seattle defense in the 84th minute. Harrington cut in from the right flank across the middle of the field and around two defenders. He then lofted a ball toward midfielder Roger Espinoza on the left side of the penalty area. Espinoza raced to the ball, cut inside a defender and fired high and hard toward goal. Eylander was there, however to block the opportunity clear.

Goalkeeper Eric Kronberg then made an excellent save in extra time to keep the teams on level terms. In the 94th minute, substitute midfielder Jason Cascio got a clean look at goal from 18 yards out after a quick combination through midfield by Seattle. Cascio's hard shot toward the back post was parried wide by a dive from Kronberg, however, to keep the game scoreless.

The game was then decided in sudden-death penalty kicks. Ryan Pore converted the first for Kansas City, followed by a successful attempt from Seattle's Danny Jackson. Each team's second shooter failed to convert, as Chris Eylander stopped an effort from Wizards captain Jimmy Conrad and Seattle forward Sebastian Le Toux put his chance off the crossbar. The next four shooters for both teams converted before Eylander stopped Tyson Wahl's penalty. Zach Scott then stepped up and buried his chance in the right-side netting to send Seattle through to the semifinal round August 12 at fellow USL-1 side Charleston Battery.

The Wizards return home tomorrow and play again Thursday at 7 p.m. CT against Red Bull New York. Kansas City will then host Mexican partner club Atlas AC the next night at 7 p.m. CT. Both games will be played at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. Friday's match will conclude a five-game in 11-day stretch that included two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup games, two MLS matches and an international friendly.
