Weekly update: Two matches on tap

Tim Ward is one of three Crew players that has been called to the U.S. U-20 team.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Crew play host to the MLS-rival Los Angeles Galaxy tonight (Tuesday, April 24) at 7:30 p.m., at Crew Stadium, in a U.S. Open Cup qualifying match. This season marks the first time since 2002 - when the Crew won the tournament - that all eligible MLS teams will not participate in the U.S. Open Cup tournament proper, due to schedule congestion, but each will have the chance to qualify for the tournament.

The game will be webcast live (audio) on TheCrew.com with Neil Sika and John Bluem calling all the live action.

The top six MLS teams from the 2006 standings are being placed in the tournament proper, while the six remaining teams will play qualifying matches. The Crew vs. Galaxy and Kansas City Wizards vs. Real Salt Lake will make up the first qualifying round, with the winners facing the New York Red Bulls and Colorado Rapids, respectively, for a chance to qualify for the tournament.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (known as the U.S. Open Cup until 1999) is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 93 consecutive years dating back to 1914. Renamed in September of 1999 to honor Columbus Crew founder Lamar Hunt's contributions to the game of soccer, the Open Cup tournament matches teams that are placed in one of the following four categories: professional outdoor Division I (Major League Soccer), Division II (USL First Division) or Division III (USL Second Division); or Amateur Division (USL Premier Development League & U.S. Adult Soccer Association).

The team that advances the furthest in the single-elimination tournament from each level except Division I earns a $10,000 cash prize. The runner-up takes home $50,000, while the champion collects $100,000. The winner also will have the team's name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, the oldest trophy in American team sports that is housed in the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y.

The match is part of all Crew Soccer Nation Gold-level memberships, classified as "Special Game A" in those ticket books.
