Weekly update: Two-fer ahead for L.A.

Cobi Jones can log his 300th appearance this week.

The LA Galaxy will look to gain momentum this week against two Western Conference opponents as the club strives earn the final berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Galaxy will first face Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Rice-Eccles Stadium (6 p.m. on FSN West and HDNet) in a game that will see both teams try and separate themselves from last place in the MLS Western Conference.


The Galaxy will return to Southern California on Thursday to begin preparations for their next game against FC Dallas on Sunday, Sept. 23. The match, which is presented by Verizon Wireless and can be seen live on FSN West and HDNet, kicks off at 5 p.m. from The Home Depot Center, with the first 5,000 fans entering the stadium receiving a Galaxy soccer ball sponsored by Verizon Wireless.

Galaxy Team Notes

ONE AWAY FROM 300: Galaxy midfielder Cobi Jones is now just one game away from competing in his 300th regular season game of his MLS career. Since the inaugural 1996 season, Jones has appeared in 299 games for the Galaxy, scoring 70 goals and adding 89 assists. If Jones, who has said that he will retire after the 2007 season, appears in just one more game, he will join Steve Ralston, Chris Henderson and Jason Kreis as the only players in league history to have appeared in 300 or more regular season games in MLS history.


VAGENAS IN WITH THE KIDS: Galaxy midfielder Peter Vagenas will be in Monrovia on Sept. 21 from 6-7 p.m. to take part in the sixth installment of the 2007 Galaxy Clinic Series, which aims to support and create recreational activities focused on disadvantaged and at risk children in the Southern California area. Participants, ages 7 through 12, will receive professional instruction from Vagenas as well as walk away with Galaxy goodies.


TEN MISS LA GALAXY FINALISTS TO BE INTRODUCED: The Los Angeles Galaxy will present the top 10 candidates to be the next Miss LA Galaxy on Sunday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m. at SoccerFest on the Main Concourse of The Home Depot Center prior to the Galaxy-FC Dallas match. The ten finalists were selected after a tough interviewing process and meeting the contest requirements.


RECORD YOUR VIDEO MESSAGE AT COBI'S CORNER: Galaxy fans are encouraged to record a "video message" to retiring Galaxy star midfielder Cobi Jones from 4-5 p.m. this Sunday, September 23 before the Galaxy-FC Dallas match at The Home Depot Center. Feel free to wish him well in retirement, recount your favorite Cobi Jones moment, or even plead your case for him to stay one more year. In addition at Cobi's Corner, fans can see each of the different jerseys that Jones has worn over the last 12 seasons in MLS with the Galaxy.
