Everton finished 11th in the 20-team Premier League's 2005/2006 season. The game vs. The Crew will be one of the final preparation matches before Everton kicks off the next Premier League season in mid-August.

Three members of the Everton squad participated in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, and two of them made dramatic impacts for their respective countries. Portugal defender Nuno Valente started five of his team's six games, helping them notch four shutouts. Australian midfielder Tim Cahill played in all four games, starting twice, and scored two second half goals as Australia downed Japan, 3-1. The third player is former MLS star and U.S. National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard. He did not see any action for the U.S. Howard was recently loaned to Everton for the 2006-2007 season from Manchester United where he has played since July 2003.

The Crew is 6-1-1 all-time in international exhibitions, including 2-0-1 against teams from the English Premier League. The Black & Gold downed Leeds, 2-1, in 1997, tied Newcastle, 2-2, in 2000, and defeated Fulham, 2-1, in 2005.

CREW TO MEET D.C. UNITED IN OPEN CUP ROUND OF 16 ON AUGUST 1 IN MARYLAND
The Columbus Crew advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 with a 4-1 win over the Premier Development League Michigan Bucks on July 12 at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester Hills, Mich.

Columbus will now take on D.C. on Tuesday, August 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Maryland Soccer SoccerPlex in Germantown, Mary. An audiocast of the game will be available through TheCrew.com and MLSnet.com.

The Crew tallied three second half goals to pull away for the win after being tied at 1-1 at the half. Ezra Hendrickson, Ivan Becerra, Jacob Thomas scored for the Black & Gold, with the fourth and final goal coming via an own goal, while Sebastian Rozental notched all three assists. It only took Columbus 16 minutes to pull in front, with Hendrickson finding the back of the net. But the amateur side equalized just six minutes later through Doug Rice. The 1-1 score held through halftime before Columbus took the lead for good just prior to the hour mark. Rozental earned his second assist of the night by feeding Becerra on a corner kick for what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 59th minute. Thomas put a stamp on the victory with a blast from 30-plus yards in the 87th minute before a Bucks own goal through Erik Nelson a minute before the final whistle gave the game its final scoreline.

Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 90-year-old single-elimination tournament.
