Weekly Update: Rocky Mountain Cup

Yura Movsisyan and RSL will take on the Rapids for the Rocky Mt. Cup.

RSL Closes 2007 Campaign Saturday in Colorado with Rocky Mountain Cup on the Line

Real Salt Lake (5-15-9, 24 pts.) will pull the curtain on its 2007 campaign this Saturday, Oct. 20, when Utah's MLS side will travel across the Rockies to take on the archrival Colorado Rapids (9-12-8, 35 pts.) in a finale that will decide the heated fight for the Rocky Mountain Cup. Kick-off from Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. is set for 7:00 p.m. MT for a contest that will air live on Fox Sports Net-Utah and RSL's official radio partners, KALL 700 Sports and "La Bonita" AM-1600.

The fourth and final meeting will unlock the 1-1-1 stalemate RSL and the Rapids have fought to through their first three games this season, the most recent meeting coming on Sept. 22, when RSL scored early and held on for a 1-0 victory at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Rapids started the 2007 series off with a win of their own at Rice-Eccles, a 2-0 triumph all the way back on April 30, while the two rivals dueled to a bizarre 1-1 draw in their first-ever meeting at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on May 10. RSL trails the overall series against the Rapids 3-6-2, but the records can be thrown out in this affair, as RSL is going for its first Rocky Mountain Cup series triumph, while the Rapids need three points - and three points only - in their attempt to capture one of two remaining spots in the 2007 MLS Cup Playoffs across the final weekend of regular season play.

Still Time to Hop Aboard for the "Rocky Mountain Cup Road Trip"

Real Salt Lake has extended its offer to join members of its front office staff in bringing the Rocky Mountain Cup back to Utah this weekend, as the club is offering its "Rocky Mountain Cup Road Trip" travel package through this Thursday, Oct. 18 at 5:00 p.m. MT. For $65, RSL supporters will receive a round-trip charter bus seat and a ticket to the expected sell-out affair against the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. A limited-time offer for hotel accommodations on that Saturday evening is also being extended to the RSL travel party (details below).

The two-day trip will begin early on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20, when the fan bus will depart the RSL offices (located in the Trolley Corners building at 515 S. 700 East in Salt Lake City) at 6:00 a.m. The bus will arrive at the trip's hotel headquarters, the Fairfield Inn - Airport in Denver (6851 Tower Road) for a brief stopover before heading to Dick's Sporting Goods Park for the 7:00 p.m. kick-off. The fan bus will make it a "two-for-one" weekend on Sunday by heading back to Dick's Sporting Goods Park for the MLS Reserve Division contest between the RMC rivals before heading back for Salt Lake City, with an expected return time at the RSL office of 9:00 p.m. A full Rocky Mountain Cup Road Trip itinerary is included below.

A limited number of seats still remain on the bus, and fans wishing to reserve their spot for the Rocky Mountain Cup Road Trip are asked to contact Teresa Nelson in the RSL office at 801-924-8565 or via email at tnelson@realsaltlake.com by no later than Thursday, Oct. 18 at 5:00 p.m. MT.

In addition to the bus and ticket package, Real Salt Lake has also worked with the Fairfield Inn to secure a special room rate for the Saturday night stay. RSL fans can reserve a room with two queen size beds for just $99 (plus tax), which also includes a complementary continental breakfast on Sunday morning. Just a handful of rooms are still available at this special group rate, so fans are asked to call the Fairfield Inn at 1-800-228-9290 by Friday, Oct. 19, and mention the "RSL group rate" when making the reservation.

Diablos SC Takes 2007 Utah Open Cup Final in PK's

Real Salt Lake would like to congratulate Diablos SC, who defeated Westminster FC in penalty kicks on Monday night to take the 2007 Utah Soccer Association Utah Open Cup Final. The two Salt Lake City-based amateur sides dueled to a 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime play at Rice-Eccles Stadium, but it was Diablos SC taking the kicks from the penalty spot by a 4-2 margin to earn the right to hoist the cup in the 30th edition of the Utah Open Cup tournament. The Utah Open Cup is an annual tournament that allows all divisions in the Utah Soccer Association to play against each other, similar to the U.S. Soccer's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the Football Association (FA) Cup in England.
