Weekly update: Reserves fall in Dallas

RSL Reserves Fall 2-1 at FC Dallas

The FC Dallas Reserves today defeated the Real Salt Lake Reserves 1-0 in a game played on the adidas Field at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. FCD rookie forward Scott Jones scored the lone goal midway through the second half to give the FCD Reserves their first win of the year (1-2-0, 3 pts), while the resulted dropped the RSL Reserves to 0-3-0 on the season.

FC Dallas dictated play much of the first half, keeping possession on the RSL end of the field and attacking from the right flank often, but the "Hoops" did not have anything to show for their efforts in the first 45 minutes. FCD midfielder David Wagenfuhr continuously found himself open to start the second half, ripping four shots within the first ten minutes of the stanza, but RSL Reserves rookie goalkeeper Kyle Reynish - seeing his first official minutes in an RSL uniform - made a diving save on one attempt and watched a volley from inside the box miss just wide left.

Dallas finally broke through the 68th minute, when defender Bobby Rhine lofted a ball over RSL's back line, finding Jones just outside the box. Jones took one touch forward towards the left before hitting a low shot underneath an outstretched Reynish for his first goal of the season.

Real Salt Lake pressed late in the match and threatened to draw even in the 76th minute, when substitute forward Jamie Watson took a cross from the right side and fired a point-blank shot from 10 yards that was saved by FC Dallas Reserves 'keeper Ray Burse. RSL continued to press for the equalizer, with two chances from midfielder Duke Hashimoto and a turn-and-shoot effort from striker Kyle Brown in the last ten minutes all being saved by Burse to preserve the 1-0 victory.

The Real Salt Lake Reserves will not have the chance to go after their first win of the campaign for more than two months time, their next game taking place on July 29 against their counterparts from the New England Revolution at Quinn's Junction in Park City.

RSL's Road Trip Rolls On Wednesday at Colorado, Sunday in Chicago
Real Salt Lake (0-3-4, 4 pts.) will continue its month-long, five-game road trip with a pair of contests this week, beginning with a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup "play-in" contest this Wednesday, May 23 against its Rocky Mountain Cup rival, the Colorado Rapids (3-2-3, 12 pts. in MLS play). Wednesday's match, which will determine the last of MLS's eight entrants into the 94th edition of the U.S. Open Cup, will kick off from Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. at 7:00 p.m. MT and can be followed live over the airwaves on KALL-AM 700 "The Zone" (English) and "La Bonita" KXTA-AM 1600 (Spanish). The regional rivals have already met twice in the first month-and-a-half of League play, with Colorado capturing a 2-0 win at Rice-Eccles Stadium on April 30 before the squads dueled to a bizarre 1-1 draw in RSL's debut at the new home of the Rapids on May 10.

RSL will return to League action this Sunday, May 27, when the Utah side will make its lone visit of 2007 to Bridgeview, Ill. to take on the Chicago Fire (3-3-1, 10 pts.) at Toyota Park. Kick-off in Chicagoland is set for 3:00 p.m. MT, and fans can watch the match live on TeleFutura or listen to the action on RSL's radio partners KALL-AM 700 and KXTA-AM 1600. Sunday's match will mark the first of two meetings against Chicago this season, with the Fire set to make its sole journey to the Wasatch Front on August 18. RSL is 1-3-0 all-time against the Fire, the teams each winning at home during the 2006 season - RSL claiming a 3-1 win at Rice-Eccles on June 3 and Chicago taking a 2-1 victory less than a month later at Toyota Park on June 28.

RSL Rewind: Gbandi's Late Bomb Gives FC Dallas 2-1 Win Over RSL
A late goal would victimize Real Salt Lake once again, as an 82nd minute strike by FC Dallas DF Chris Gbandi would lift the home-standing "Hoops" to a 2-1 victory Sunday evening at Pizza Hut Park. FC Dallas would get their goals on a pair of classy strikes, with MF Arturo Alvarez's defense-splitting run and side-netting finish from 16 yards out midway through the first half and Gbandi's game-winner eight minutes from time sandwiching Real Salt Lake MF Freddy Adu's first goal for the Utah side, a 68th minute conversion from the penalty spot. The loss snapped Real Salt Lake's two-game undefeated streak and marked the first loss in Jason Kreis's head coaching tenure with RSL.
