Last Match
Earthquakes 2, Rapids 0; Apr. 19, 2008; Dick's Sporting Goods Park; Commerce City, Colo.
The San Jose Earthquakes earned their first win of the 2008 season with a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Ronnie O'Brien netted the first goal of the game and Kei Kamara scored an insurance goal in the second half to give head coach Frank Yallop his first win since returning to the Quakes this season. After a slow start that almost saw the Rapids score in the opening minute, the Earthquakes applied heavy pressure throughout the first half, especially in the final 15 minutes of the half. Following some near misses by Gavin Glinton, O'Brien had the first clear-cut chance in the 30th minute. O'Brien received a ball at the back post and cut back past one defender, before launching a left-footed blast high. Just minutes later, Glinton got on the end of a ball from Ivan Guerrero on the left flank, but Rapids defender Stephen Keel knocked the ball away. Kamara got into the action with two chances a minute apart with under 10 minutes to play in the half. On the first, he got behind the defense from a Ned Grabavoy pass and ripped a shot near post that was tipped wide by goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. He then got free in the box to tip a Jason Hernandez cross off Coundoul and off the crossbar. Glinton appeared to score the first goal off the season for San Jose in the 40th minute. He got behind the defense after a chip by Grabavoy. Coundoul charged off his line to beat Glinton to the ball, but his clearance deflected off Glinton, giving the Turks and Caicos international an empty net to shoot at. As Glinton finished into the empty net, the referee waved off the goal, signaling a hand ball on Glinton on the deflection. The pressure paid off in the 43rd minute as O'Brien finally broke through for San Jose. Colorado native James Riley found O'Brien on the right side of the box. He unleashed a right-footed blast that Coundoul blocked, but the rebound fell back to O'Brien, and he finished with the left foot past Coundoul for a 1-0 Quakes advantage. Just over 15 minutes into the second half, Kamara stretched the Quakes lead to 2-0 with a goal on a breakaway. Grabavoy received a pass from O'Brien and beat two defenders before sliding a pass through to Kamara. The Sierra Leone native burst past Facundo Erpen and slotted a shot past Coundoul. The goal came in the 61st minute. Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon preserved the shutout with an incredible stop in the 68th minute on a shot by Nick LaBrocca. LaBrocca received the ball 23 yards away and drove a shot that was head to the upper corner. Cannon leapt and tipped the shot off the crossbar to keep the Quakes lead at 2-0.

Last Match vs. Red Bulls
Earthquakes 2, Red Bulls 1; Saturday, July 23, 2005; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes used a dominating performance and goals by Mark Chung and Dwayne De Rosario to earn a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls at Spartan Stadium and move into a tie for first place in the Western Conference with FC Dallas at the All-Star break. The Earthquakes put plenty of pressure on the Red Bulls in the games first 15 minutes, and had a breakaway opportunity in the 15th minute when Brian Mullan ran onto a long ball behind the Metros defense by Chung. Red Bulls defender Jeff Parke was able to catch up and disrupt him, allowing goalkeeper Tony Meola to gather the ball. The action opened up in the 32nd minute, with the Red Bulls taking a 1-0 lead on an own goal. Eddie Gaven started the play when he dribbled with the ball into the left corner before hitting Ryan Suarez at the corner of the penalty box. Immediately after Suarez hit a cross toward goal, Quakes midfielder Ricardo Clark jumped to block it. The ball deflected off Clark and straight into the air toward the goal, where it popped over goalkeeper Pat Onstad and into the net for a 1-0 lead. The Quakes answered almost immediately with a goal from Chung. With the ball in the right side of the Red Bulls penalty area, Moreno slipped a pass back to Dwayne De Rosario standing near the top of the box. De Rosario chipped a ball over the defense to an on-rushing Chung at the far post. Chung beat his defender and headed the ball home past Meola to put the finish on a beautiful attack to tie the game 1-1. A quick flurry of action early in the second half culminated in the Quakes taking a 2-1 lead on De Rosario's third goal of the year. In the 52nd minute, Clark sliced a fine through ball to an open Wade Barrett in the middle of the Metros penalty area. Barrett took a touch and fired a ball toward goal, but Meola was able to make the save. The Red Bulls responded just seconds later and forced Onstad to make a terrific save when Sergio Galvan Ray slotted a pass to Ibrahim open near the top left side of the Quakes six yard box. Onstad was able to kick away Ibrahim's low shot. A minute later, the Quakes grabbed the advantage on a quick attack up the field in the 53rd minute. Kelly Gray sent a ball to Chung, who headed it up field to himself before slicing a terrific low ball through the defense to an on-rushing De Rosario. De Rosario touched the ball forward and dribbled alone into the penalty area before calmly sending a low shot the right of a diving Meola for the 2-1 lead.

Reserves
Earthquakes 1, Rapids 1; Sunday, Apr. 20, 2008; Dick's Sporting Goods Park; Commerce City, Colo.
The Colorado Rapids Reserves battled the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves to a 1-1 draw under a cloudless sky at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids Reserves had the first scoring chance in the 22nd minute when Ciaran O'Brien put in a corner kick that Kelly Gray headed, but San Jose 'keeper Preston Burpo was in the right position to make the save. Gray almost put the Rapids Reserves up again in the 35th minute. His long drive from 25 yards out was saved by a diving Burpo. Gray would break the scoring barrier in the 80th minute. Kosuke Kimura played a ball to Gray on the flank. The San Jose native then cut inside and ripped a shot inside the far post to give Colorado the 1-0 lead. San Jose would equalize in the 88th minute when Eric Denton took a free kick from just outside the penalty area and snuck his shot to the far post and in. Colorado's Herculez Gomez had an opportunity to grab the game winner in the 90th minute, but his chip over Burpo landed just outside the net.
