Galaxy Team Notes

BECKHAM NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: On Monday afternoon, Galaxy midfielder David Beckham was named MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters. Beckham had a goal, his first in MLS competition, and an assist in the Galaxy's 2-0 win over the Earthquakes on Thursday night to claim the award. This is the first Player of the Week honor in Major League Soccer for Beckham, and the first for a Galaxy player since Landon Donovan was named Player of the Week during Week 4 of the 2007 MLS season.

STARRING STARTS: Rookies Sean Franklin and Brandon McDonald each made their first starts in MLS on Thursday night, playing the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over San Jose. For Franklin, it was also his MLS debut as he was drafted into the side as a central defender, replacing the suspended Abel Xavier. McDonald started in lieu of Peter Vagenas, who he had replaced at halftime of the season opener in Colorado.

BECKHAM STRIKE UP FOR GOAL OF THE WEEK: David Beckham's first half goal against San Jose has been nominated for Sierra Mist MLS Goal of the Week. Fans can vote for Beckham's goal by clicking here. Last year, two Galaxy players won the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week award as both Landon Donovan (Week 4) and Edson Buddle (Week 28) took home the award in 2007.

GALAXY ACQUIRE DRAFT PICK: Last week, the Galaxy acquired a fourth round pick in the 2009 MLS Supplemental Draft for the rights to midfielder Matt Hatzke, who was selected by the Galaxy in this year's SuperDraft but was not offered a contract by the club. The former Santa Clara player signed with the Earthquakes last week and played against the Galaxy in Friday's Reserve Division game.

LOOKING AT THE OPPOSITION: On Sunday, the Galaxy will take on Toronto FC at The Home Depot Center in the first of two meetings between the two sides this season. Last year, the Galaxy earned a win and a draw against Toronto, defeating the Canadian club 2-1 at The Home Depot Center on October 13. Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle scored for the Galaxy in that game, giving the Galaxy their fifth straight win.

Toronto FC has opened the season with a 0-2-0 record, allowing six goals while scoring just one. They will be without the services of former Galaxy midfielder Kevin Harmse, who was traded to Toronto in February, on Sunday following his red card against D.C. United on Saturday.
