Last Match

Earthquakes 1, New York Red Bulls 1
July 27, 2008; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif.

In a game both teams needed to win, the San Jose Earthquakes and New York Red Bulls had to settle for a 1-1 draw on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Red Bulls were gifted an early own goal, but one of the Earthquakes' new signings, Darren Huckerby, equalized nine minutes later. Just four minutes into the game the Red Bulls scored, with a lot of help from the Earthquakes. Dave van den Bergh's long cross from left midfield looked relatively harmless as San Jose defender Eric Denton played it on the bounce inside the penalty area, but Denton's header back to Joe Cannon floated over the goalkeeper's head and into the net. The Earthquakes got that goal back in the 13th minute. A Ronnie O'Brien throw in found Sealy in the box with his back to the goal. Sealy turned and shot left footed from 10 yards out. Jon Conway made the initial save, but Darren Huckerby pounced on the rebound, scoring his first MLS goal to tie the game at 1-1. San Jose had most of the chances the rest of the way, but neither team could break through for the deciding goal. Twice, Jeff Parke made sliding tackles to stop an Earthquakes forward breaking in alone on goal. Parke's heroics stopped Ryan Johnson in the 22nd minute and Sealy in the 79th. New York's best scoring chance came in the 87th minute, after John Wolyniec spun past two defenders and broke in on goal from the left side of midfield. Wolyniec set up Mike Magee for a shot, but his effort from the top of the box went straight to goalkeeper Cannon.

Last Match vs. Los Angeles Galaxy

Galaxy 3, Earthquakes 0
June 14, 2008; McAfee Coliseum; Oakland, Calif.

In front of 39,872, the largest non-doubleheader crowd in San Jose's history, the Earthquakes fell 3-0 to David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Galaxy's Edson Buddle opened the scoring in the sixth minute, David Beckham served up a cross to Josh Tudela in front of the goal. Tudela headed the ball down to Edson Buddle at the top of the box, and Buddle slammed a volley past a diving Joe Cannon inside the left post for a 1-0 lead. The Galaxy almost got another goal in the 18th minute as Buddle, out on the right wing, worked his way in along the goal line. Buddle slid a pass to Ely Allen inside the six-yard box. Allen's quick turning shot beat the goalkeeper but banged off the near post before being cleared away and came out the other side. San Jose struggled to find an equalizer. San Jose's best chance in the first half came in the 24th minute, when Ryan Johnson's diving header was saved by goalkeeper Steve Cronin. John Cunliffe's shot in the 41st minute sailed wide of the left post. In the 60th minute, Kelly Gray stole the ball and fired a shot from 25 yards out, but it sailed wide right. The second goal came on a Buddle header in the 63rd minute. San Jose tried to answer in the 65th minute, as a through ball sprung Shea Salinas up the middle of the field, but his shot sailed wide right. In the 68th minute, it was the Galaxy again working the left side with good results. The Galaxy stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 68th minute. Ante Jazic played the ball to an overlapping Mike Randolph down the wing. Randolph's cross found Buddle, again about 10 yards in front of goal, and his leaping header finished his hat trick. It was the second hat trick of the season for Buddle, who earlier had netted three goals in a game against Dallas. Ramiro Corrales took his first shot of the match in the 81st minute but the ball went high. Seconds later, Ned Grabavoy shot from the goal box but the shot went wide right. Gray took his third shot of the game from 25 yards out but the shot went over the crossbar and into the crowd. Buddle almost had a fourth goal in the 86th minute when he broke in alone on the goalkeeper, but he fired just wide of the far post. Gray tried in vain to put the Earthquakes on the scoreboard with a turning shot from the top of the box in the 88th minute, but he couldn't get in on target.

History of the Earthquakes-Galaxy Rivalry

As the two original MLS teams in California, the Earthquakes (then known as the Clash) and the Galaxy met for the first time in league history on April 28, 1996 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. In front of a crowd of 40,347, the Clash fell to the Galaxy 2-1. From 1996-2005, the two teams met each other more than any other teams in the league. Along with playing each other 38 times in the regular season, the Quakes and the Galaxy have also met eight times in the playoffs and four times in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The teams squared off in the playoffs in 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005 ... The Galaxy captured the 1996 three-game series two games to one, winning the final two games of the series at the Rose Bowl ... In 2001, the two teams met in MLS Cup with the Quakes earning a 2-1 overtime win. Dwayne De Rosario scored the winning goal in overtime for San Jose ... The 2003 playoff series between the Galaxy and the Quakes produced one of the most memorable games in league history. After losing the opening game of the two-game aggregate goal series 2-0, San Jose fell behind 2-0 in the second game to trail 4-0 overall in the series. However, the Earthquakes responded with four goals in regulation to tie the series 4-4. Chris Ronér tied the series in the 90th minute. Rodrigo Faria then scored six minutes into overtime to send San Jose to the Western Conference Championship game. The Quakes would go on to win the 2003 MLS Cup ... 2005 marked the end of the line for the Quakes. After losing the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals 3-1 to the Galaxy at The Home Depot Center, the Quakes needed another two-goal comeback to win the series. After going up 1-0 on a Brian Ching goal in game two on Oct. 29, 2005, Ned Grabavoy scored for the Galaxy to end the Quakes hopes. That match marked the Earthquakes final game before the team was relocated to Houston on Dec. 15, 2005.

Donovan: A Familiar Face Meets a Former Team

Galaxy forward Landon played for the Quakes from 2001 to 2004. He then left San Jose to join Bayer Leverkusen in Germany before returning to play for Los Angeles in 2005. He helped the Galaxy eliminate the Quakes from the playoffs in 2005 Western Conference Semifinals by scoring two goals in the first leg and recorded an assist on Ned Grabavoy's goal in the second leg. Donovan scored 32 goals and notched 29 assists in his Earthquakes career and is still the club's all-time leader in playoff goals with 10. For the first time in his career, Donovan saw Quakes head coach Frank Yallop coaching the opposing team in the Quakes' 2-0 loss to the Galaxy on April 3. With the exception of Yallop coaching the Canadian National Team in a friendly game against the Quakes in 2004, Yallop coached Donovan his entire MLS coaching career before this season.

Earthquakes and Galaxy's MLS Cup Success

Since the 2001 season, the Earthquakes and the Galaxy have each won two MLS Cups. The Quakes defeated the Galaxy 2-1 in a dramatic fashion to capture the 2001 MLS Cup in overtime. The Quakes would return to the top in 2003 when they defeated the Chicago Fire 4-2 at The Home Depot Center. The Galaxy would claim their second championship in 2005 when they defeated the Revolution again in overtime.
