Weekly update: Crucial conference clash

Sacha Kljestan

CARSON, Calif. - With the home stretch of the season in full swing, Chivas USA plays host to the Houston Dynamo in a critical Western Conference match this Saturday night in The Home Depot Center. A win would put Chivas USA just one point behind second-place Houston in the standings. The match, which will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2, kicks off in Carson at 8:00 p.m. PT (TV: ESPN2; Radio: KTNQ 1020 AM Univision Radio; Web: MLSLIVE.tv). For information on the latest ticket offers, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit the team's official website at www.cdchivasusa.com.

CHIVAS COMING OFF 1-1 DRAW WITH KANSAS CITY: Jonathan Bornstein continued his impressive rookie campaign as the versatile player scored his fifth goal of the season in the 83rd minute of Saturday night's game to force a 1-1 tie against the Wizards. Francisco Mendoza threaded a pass through the midfield to Sacha Kljestan, whose perfect through ball found Bornstein in the clear, and the Los Alamitos native finished past Kansas City goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi for a dramatic equalizer. The draw put Chivas USA's record at 7-6-10 and the team's 31 points puts it in fourth place in the Western Conference, one point behind Colorado and two points ahead of Real Salt Lake in the standings.

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS DRAW TO A CLOSE: Chivas USA have been a part of a number of events over the last few weeks to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the founding of Club Deportivo Guadalajara. First was a doubleheader in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on August 6, when Chivas USA faced the New England Revolution immediately before a match between Chivas Guadalajara and FC Barcelona. The match drew a record crowd of 92,650 fans and featured a pair of 1-1 draws. Next was the '100-Hour Soccer Game' in Bell Gardens, the longest match on record in the United States. The match helped raise money for the 'Fundación Chivas de Corazón USA', and featured appearances from Chivas Co-Owner Jorge Vergara and legendary Chivas de Guadalajara player Chava Reyes, among many others. The game ended in a victory for the Chivas team over the Rest of the World team, by a score of 437-429. A fireworks display at the end of Saturday night's match against Kansas City was the official conclusion of Chivas USA's Centenary celebrations for sister team, Chivas de Guadalajara.

CHIVAS USA RESERVES DRAW IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA: The Chivas USA reserves traveled north on Sunday for a match against the championship team from the National Premier Soccer League, the Sacramento Knights. In an exciting game at Cosumnes River College, Chivas got goals from Estuardo Sanchez and Carlos Faria in the 2-2 tie. An estimated crowd of about 1000 turned out for the exhibition match.

GUADALAJARA UPDATE: Chivas de Guadalajara picked up its second consecutive win on Sunday with a 2-1 road victory over Pachuca, thanks to a last-minute own goal from Pachuca's Andres Chitiva. Alberto Medina's shot bounced off the defender's back and into the net in the 90th minute, giving Chivas revenge after a last-gasp goal from Pachuca last season kept the Red-and-White out of the playoffs. Chivas' other goal came from Sergio Santana, and the win gives the team a record of two wins and a loss. Chivas will return home for a home match on Saturday against Cruz Azul.
