SECAUCUS, NJ - Ronald Waterreus, goalkeeper for the New York Red Bulls, officially announced his retirement from soccer at the end of the 2007 season.
"I have been very fortunate to enjoy a long and eventful professional soccer career," said Waterreus. "Over the past 20 years, I have been lucky to play at the top level in a number of different countries and gain memories that I will never forget. The whole ride has been a lot of fun."
"I would like to congratulate Ronald for his wonderful career," said Jeff Agoos, New York Red Bulls Technical Director, "Ronald has been a consummate professional throughout his time here and he has been a leader on this team. We wish him the very best in his next stage of life."
Signed as a senior international player on January 29, 2007, Waterreus earned the starting role for the Red Bulls this past season. Over the course of the 2007 campaign, the Lemiers, Holland, native made 18 starts and posted a 6-6-5 record. The 37 year-old netminder also recorded five shutouts and a 1.79 goals against average.
Before joining the Red Bulls, Waterreus has had an impressive career playing for a number of top-flight European teams including PSV Eindhoven, Manchester City and Glasgow Rangers. Waterreus was also a member of the Dutch National Team, where he earned seven caps.
