Upsets mark first round of NCAA tourney

The second round of the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship is set after a first round that was marked by several surprise results.


First, Central Conn. St. used an 84th minute goal from junior Yan Klukowski to upend Harvard, 3-2. The victory marked the first NCAA tournament win in any sport in the school's Division I history. They'll now take on No. 16 Tulsa in the second round.


Oakland University pulled a stunner in East Lansing, hanging on to eliminate Michigan State by a final of 2-1. The Golden Grizzlies (12-6-3) advanced to play Notre Dame on Wednesday.


Vermont pulled off a stunner of their own in thrilling fashion Saturday, scoring with 26 seconds remaining in regulation before outpointing Dartmouth on penalty kicks to move on. The Catamounts (9-9-3) will face a tough challenge in round two in the form of No. 3 UConn.


In the final upset of the weekend, Illinois-Chicago dispatched Saint Louis on penalty kicks, 6-5, after playing 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. The Flames (11-5-6) now draw area rival Northwestern, the No. 9 seed of the tournament.


Other first round winners included UMass, who will play top-seeded Boston College, SMU, who plays No. 8 Creighton, Louisville, who will take on No. 5 Ohio State, Washington, who draws No. 12 UCSB, Loyola (Md.), who will resume a local rivalry with No. 13 Maryland, Bradley, who will battle No. 4 Indiana, South Florida, who matches up with No. 14 Akron, Cal, who will go opposite No. 11 Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, who will next take on No. 6 Brown, UCLA, who will travel to No. 7 Santa Clara, Virginia, who will enter into a cross-state rivalry with No. 15 West Virginia, and Furman, who draws a tough matchup with No. 2 Wake Forest.


All 16 second-round matches are slated to be played on Wednesday.
