United for D.C. Celebrity Golf Tournament raises more than $70,000

Washington, D.C. - United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United, announced today that the sold-out Sixth Annual United for D.C. Celebrity Golf Tournament presented by GEICO, R&R Catering and United Bank, and supported by American Airlines raised more than $70,000. Proceeds from the event will be used to benefit the charity's three signature programs - United Reads, Kicks for Kids and the United Soccer Club - all of which place an emphasis on literacy, healthy lifestyles and life skills for youth in the Washington, D.C. area through the sport of soccer.


"Last week's golf tournament provided a great day of fun for everyone involved," said Stephen Zack, President of the United for D.C. Board of Directors and Executive Vice President of D.C. United. "More importantly, we were able to generate a record-setting amount of money for our valuable community initiatives. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all participants. We look forward to seeing everyone out again next summer."


Held at the Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club in Leesburg, VA, thirty-six fivesomes - including a guest celebrity - teed off with a shotgun start, playing best ball, captain's choice, at 1:30 pm on Monday, June 18. First place in the event went to the team consisting of Assistant Coach Mark Simpson, Dominic Turano, Mike Harloff, Jonathan Larsen and Strick Heilman. United President and CEO Kevin Payne's group consisting of Peter Magellan, Mike Williams, John Miller, and Lance Howden earned second place honors. The Fox Soccer Channel team of United defender Facundo Erpen, Blake Fulton, Chris Killebrew, Munzer Qaddourah, and David Grex finished in third place. Lance Howden, Dan Frix and Gayle Sweeney were among the individual award winners.
