Tottenham, Chelsea battle again

Tottenham's Pascal Chimbonda shows his frustration as the Spurs suffer their third defeat since the Carling Cup.

Juande Ramos is demanding professionalism from Tottenham as they look to put another dent in Chelsea's season and avoid their lowest Premier League points haul themselves.

Spurs' campaign has been defined by their Carling Cup triumph over Avram Grant's men but they have suffered three defeats since, with Ramos assessing the response of his players for the rest of the season.

The Spaniard arrived at White Hart Lane in October and is beginning to shape his squad for his first full season, and he has warned his squad no player is guaranteed to play.

Even top-scorer Robbie Keane has been on the bench or substituted in seven of his last eight games, although his tantrum after getting taken off against Manchester City at the weekend is not thought to have a bearing on Ramos' selection for the Chelsea clash.

The striker has picked up a knee injury in any case, which could now be a deciding factor in whether he plays or not.

According to a former team-mate, Keane "goes mad" when he gets taken off - but it is evidence of players not caring Ramos is more wary of.

"We have got nine games left until the end of the season so it is a case of looking at those nine games and assessing the players in that period and starting to make decisions about squad changes or reinforcements in the summer," said the head coach.

"We definitely want to keep trying our best until the end of the season.

"We are in a comfortable position - we are in no danger of going down, that has gone now, but we certainly want to get as high as we can in the league table.

"In spite of the fact that maybe points don't have the same meaning as they did earlier in the season we are all professionals and we will be looking for any signs of people not trying.

"We want to do our best all the way through - both the management and the players."

At stake for Spurs is avoiding their worst season in the Premier League. The calamitous reign of Christian Gross resulted in just 44 points in the 1998 season, with Jurgen Klinsmann coming back to the club to help them avoid the drop.

At White Hart Lane tomorrow they can also deny bitter rivals Chelsea three points in the title race.

"There is no target, we just want to get biggest possible number by winning all our games," Ramos added.

"We are at home and we want to be trying our best to get a victory. But there is much more at stake for Chelsea than there is for us in terms of league position.

"They will be trying to get the points because they want to become league champions but we are at home and we want all the points in front of our fans."

Ramos has been linked with a host of players from Spain, with Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni strongly tipped to arrive in the summer.

There has also been reported interest in Villarreal keeper Diego Lopez, although the Spanish club would want a bid of £18.85million before selling.

"This sum is the only one that we would study for the player's possible sale," said a spokesperson for Villarreal in the London Evening Standard.

Meanwhile, after news that the running of the club is unlikely to be affected by Joe Lewis losing a reported £500million following the collapse of American bank Bear Stearns, it is understood the proposed move of training ground has already been financed and plans are unchanged.

The board are still looking at their different stadium options, including whether to expand White Hart Lane or look at alternative sites.
