Toronto FC sign Welshman Robinson

Toronto FC announced Thursday the signing of Wales International Midfielder Carl Robinson to a multi-year contract. As per team policy, financial details were not disclosed.


Robinson, 30, arrives from Norwich City (England League Championship), is a native of Llandrindod Wells, Wales, and is a current member of the Wales National Team.


Robinson first played for the U-21 Wales team, and it was there he was noticed by Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) who took him on as a trainee in 1995 at 18 years of age.


He made his senior Wales debut against Belarus in 1999, and since then has 35 caps.


Robinson has enjoyed a long career in England playing for clubs Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Walsall, Rotherham, Sheffield United and Sunderland.


"He has vast experience, and is a great addition to our team", said Head Coach Mo Johnston, "He's a very good passer of the ball, he's played in the Premiership (England), League Championship, and we're excited he's here."


He was signed by Norwich on a six week loan deal in November 2005 and in January 2006; he agreed to join the club on a two and a half year contract.

Toronto FC also announced Thursday a new multi-year partnership with Carlsberg. Carlsberg's involvement in soccer has grown enormously over the past 20 years internationally and they are now one of the biggest sponsors in the game. Carlsberg is Official Sponsor of UEFA EURO 2008, as well as Official Beer of the England National Team, a sponsor of Liverpool FC, a sponsor of the FA Cup, and a sponsor of the UEFA Cup along with many deals with clubs across the Premiership and other leagues across the world.
