Toronto FC defeated by Red Bulls

Toronto FC is now winless in six games after dropping a 3-0 decision to Eastern Conference rivals New York Red Bulls on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

New York came charging out of the gate with a great chance early - Dave Van den Bergh was free in the box and took a quick shot on goal that was headed top corner, but it hit the post and bounced out of harms way. Less than a minute later, it was Van den Bergh again who was causing trouble - another shot from in front but this time it was stopped by Kenny Stamatopoulos who made his second straight start since joining the team last week. This was the first league game for New York since July 26th when they lost to Chivas USA, but didn't seem to show any rust in the 16 day layoff from MLS competition.

In 24th min TFC could not clear the ball after a cross into the area ricocheted off Tyrone Marshall and landed nicely at the foot of Juan Pablo Angel who smacked it top corner to put in his 10th of the season.

New York had another great chance soon after when Dane Richards burst into the area with Marshall giving chase, Stamatopoulos came out to challenge and it was the right decision, as he stopped Richards - the ball came loose, but Jim Brennan cleared it away. The score remained 1-0 New York at the half.

Five minutes into the second half, they were on the board again. Jozy Altidore sent a pass right side to Angel, his cross into the middle was blocked by a diving Adam Braz - but the ball went off him and popped up and over Stamatopoulos....Altidore got a foot on it as it was crossing the line and he gets credit as they went up 2-0 after 50. Red Bulls added a third in the 63rd and again it was the combination of Altidore and Angel - Altidore gets his second of the game with a great shot from inside the box - no chance for the keeper, 3-0 in the 63rd.

Things got worse for Toronto two minutes later when Chris Pozniak was sent off for a tackle on Richards. Richards needing attention to his shin after the challenge, and a straight red for the Canadian means he'll be suspended for TFC's next game at home to Chivas USA on August 18th. Midfielder Maurice Edu sat out this game suspended after an accumulation of cautions, but he will return next week. Forwards Jeff Cunningham, and Danny Dichio as well as midfielder Ronnie O'Brien all did not travel with the team to New Jersey staying back home due to injuries.

Red Bull captain Claudio Reyna left the game in the 22nd minute with a groin strain and did not return. No word on the severity of that injury.

Toronto returns home Monday and a training schedule for the week ahead will be updated later that day.
