Toronto FC adds goalkeeper Stamatopoulos

Toronto FC goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos looks to continue his solid play between the posts.

Toronto FC announced Friday that they have acquired Canadian Goalkeeper Kyriakos "Kenny" Stamatopoulos on a free loan from Norwegian club Tromso I.L.

As per team policy, no financial details were released.

Stamatopoulos, 28, joined Tromso in 2006, prior to that he spent time with clubs in Sweden and Greece.

"Obviously it's unfortunate with Greg's (Sutton) situation," said Head Coach Mo Johnston. "Looking at Kenny in pre-season, he looked like a very comfortable goalkeeper, he looked very agile. He was someone we were looking at, at the start of the year if Greg hadn't of panned out. Adding Stamatopoulos, I believe we're adding a quality international player to our squad, especially at a time when it's needed. I feel the young goalkeepers have come in and handled it very well, but it's time we added someone with experience."

"I'm very excited", said Stamatopoulos, "it's great to play back home. "I've heard a lot of good things about the fans here and the club, and the city is just great. I'm very happy to be here."

The keeper has 4 caps with Canada's National Team, and was called up for the first time in a match against Malta in November of 2001. In the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup he was back up to Lars Hirschfeld. His last appearance for the National team was in October of 2006 in a game against Jamaica.
