TFC's Edu named to U.S. Men's roster

Toronto FC announced Tuesday that midfielder Maurice Edu has been named to the U.S. Mens National Team squad that will play a friendly against Switzerland, at St. Jakob Park in Basel, Switzerland on October 17th.

This is Edu's first call up to the National side, and is the second Toronto FC player to wear the red, white and blue. Defender Marvell Wynne was a member of the Copa America squad earlier this year.

"I'm very happy for Maurice to be given this opportunity with the U.S. National team," said Head Coach Mo Johnston. "Obviously it will be a terrific experience; he has been superb all year both on the field and off. You have to also give huge credit to his college coach Sasha Cirovski for helping him grow as a player."

"I'm excited and honoured to get this opportunity to represent my country and play in an international game," said Edu. "It's something that I've dreamed of all my life, and I'm going to try and make the most of the chance. I'm thankful to my teammates and my coaches, as I think they have all helped me win on spot on the team."

Edu will miss Toronto FC's game in Los Angeles against the Galaxy scheduled for October 13th, as he will join up with his teammates departing from Toronto October 9th. Edu will return back to Toronto for the team's final regular season home game against the New England Revolution which will be played October 20th.

The midfielder has logged 2090 minutes and scored 4 goals so far this season as he vies for the MLS Rookie of the Year title. The University of Maryland product was the first pick overall in January's 2007 MLS SuperDraft that took place in Indianapolis.
